Just a few hours left for the big finals at the Siri Fort Sports Complex in New Delhi. Home girl and Olympic silver medalist PV Sindhu takes on Olympic gold medalist Carolina Marin of Spain.
|PV Sindhu||Carolina Marin|
|Last meeting||Sindhu won 21-17 21-13 in Dubai World SS Finals 2016|
Even though Carolina Marin leads head-to-head and world rankings, Sindhu is the one who has won their last encounter in December 2016 and she is confident of winning it again this time.
Ahead of the final, Sindhu has said that she will have the upper hand. “The final will be different. Since I will have the home advantage, it should give me the upper hand.”
Sindhu has won against the likes of Saina Nehwal and Ju-Hyun Sung en route to the finals, but Marin too is in a great form. She defeated in-form world no. 2 Akane Yamaguchi comfortably in straight games in the semi-finals.
After the Olympic title last year, Carolina Marin had suffered some injuries and that has prevented her from performing her best. She has reached only 1 finals out of last 6 tournaments she played in. In contrast, Sindhu has been in a tremendous form post-Olympics, winning her first Super Series title in China Super Series Premier last year, reaching year-end finals and cracking into the top-5 of BWF World Rankings.
We expect a very thrilling finals as just before Indian Open, Carolina Marin had expressed her desire to regain her uno numero status and she will give her best to win the title and get closer to it. She slept to no. 3 in the latest BWF World Rankings. PV Sindhu too will aim at improving her ranking from 5 and win her maiden Super Series title on home soil. She will also try to take revenge of Olympic finals defeat in front of home crowd, who would miss such a golden chance!
