Leander Paes dropped from Indian Davis Cup team, Paes unhappy with captain Bhupathi

Leander Paes has been dropped from the Indian Davis Cup team for the Asia Oceania Group tie against Uzbekistan starting today in Bengaluru

India’s non-playing captain Mahesh Bhupathi instead selected Rohan Bopanna to pair with Sriram Balaji in the second round Davis Cup tie in Group 1 of the Asia/Oceania zone to be played at the KSLTA.

“A simple phone call would have sufficed to tell me that I was not playing. A captain can have his style, but criteria for selection should be transparent. If it was form, I just won an event. That said, team is more important than me. Country is even bigger. My full support to the team,” said Paes after the announcement.

Paes, who made his Davis Cup debut against Japan in 1990 at Jaipur, has been dropped from the Davis Cup team on form for the first time in 27 years.

Indian team for the tie against Uzbekistan:

Singles
: Ramkumar Ramanathan, Prajnesh Gunneswaran

Doubles
: Rohan Bopanna, Sriram Balaji

Non-playing captain
: Mahesh Bhupathi
