Just after Dipika Pallikal made finals, Joshna Chinappa ensured that India gets its first ever Asian Squash champion as she joined Dipika in the finals with a one sided win over Tong Tsz Wing of Hong Kong 11-6 11-4 11-8 in the semis.
This victory means the “Golden Girls of Indian Squash” Dipika and Joshna will face off for the Asian title and the honour of becoming first Indian Asian Squash Champion. The duo had won doubles gold for India in Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014.
“Dipika and I knew we had a chance to lay each other in the final, so I hope everyone comes to support up – we don’t get this kind of appreciation anywhere else!” Joshna said after the match.
There was no stopping the Indians in Express Avenue Mall as Saurav Ghosal completed hattrick of Indian wins as he, too, made it to the summit clash by dethroning defending champion Leo Au of Hong Kong 11-6 11-7 11-3 in 37 minutes in the semi-finals.
He became the first Indian man to enter Asian Squash Championship finals.
“For the final, Max and I have played a lot, including many international team matches. He deserves to be there, he’s a hard worker and a great guy, but I know that it’s in my capabilities to put in a winning performance.
“It’s a privilege playing here in front of such a great crowd, I hope they all come back and support us tomorrow!” said Saurav
Since 1996 (Misha Grewal) there had been no Indian in the finals of Asian Championship until today when not one or two but three Indians made the finals!
