India’s no. 1 squash player Joshna Chinappa reigned supreme at the Asian Squash Championship 2017 in Chennai as she defeated compatriot Dipika Pallikal in 78-minute marathon finals 13-15, 12-10, 11-13, 11-4, 11-4.
It was a see-saw battle as both of them were winning sets in odd-even pattern. Dipika won first set, Joshna won second, Dipika came back strong to win third and Joshna leveled by winning fourth. At the end it was Joshna who took the honours of becoming India’s first ever Asian Squash champion.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling to win such a prestigious title here in India in front of such a great crowd,” said Joshna.
“It was always going to be a tough game between us, and it really was tough. Those first three games could all have gone either way, I’m just so happy tat I could keep my focus and take the fourth and fifth.”
Earlier in the day, Saurav Ghosal was beaten by top seed Max Lee of Hong Kong in the finals of men’s section. Saurav lost 11-5, 4-11, 8-11, 7-11.
